With some fantastic railways in Europe that run an extensive service, you can get just to about any resort you want. The major resorts most easily accessed by train are summarised below to give you an idea of the timings. Just because your favourite resort isn’t listed here doesn’t mean it can’t be reached by train – just find the closest main town and key into the routeplanner.

And remember, the Snowtrain emits just 5.7g of CO2 per person per km, as opposed to the 180g of CO2 emitted per person per km by plane.


Alps by Eurostar

France

Four main options: 1. Eurostar overnight Ski Train - 2.Daytime Ski Train - 3. Normal Eurostar via Paris - 4. Special Raileurope Snowtrain.

1. Eurostar Ski Train (Direct)

These trains are non-stop (ie no changes in Paris). Prices from £199 return (usually slightly cheaper than Raileurope below, but you sleep in your seat not a couchette), with discounts for children.

2. Eurostar via Paris
Train to Paris leaves London every hour or so from 07:30. Approx 10 hours (includes one hour to change from Paris (Nord) Paris (Lyon) by Metro & one hour time difference). So 07:30 arrives Moutiers around 17:30. Sleeper Train to Chamonix leaves Paris around 22:30 Friday arriving Chamonix 09:30 Saturday morning. Day services via Chambery or Annecy (about 3 hours from Paris).

3. Raileurope Snow train
This is different from the main Eurostar Ski Train service. It leaves St Pancras 17:29 (Ebbsfleet 18.10) Friday night arrives Bourg St Maurice (via La Plagne & Moutiers) 08:38 Saturday morning. Returns from Bourg 19:05 Saturday arrives St Pancras 09:22 Sunday morning. There is also a (soundproofed) party carriage option you want to party to the Alps! Can be slightly more expensive than Eurostar, but it includes a couchette - ie a bed rather than sleeping in your seat. More details on Snowtrain.

Switzerland

There are two main stations
1. Zurich which then links to St Moritz, Davos and Klosters. A 7am Eurostar will get you to Klosters by 7.30pm or St Moritz by 9pm; after the Zurich to Chur leg, you use the local (narrow-guage) train service.

2. Interlaken for Bern or Lausanne which links to Wengen & Jungfrau region, eg Grindelwald at the foot of the Eiger, and Lauterbrunnen, at the foot of the Jungfrau. An 8am train will get you into Interlaken by 8pm with a couple of changes or a direct one at 11am will arrive c11pm.

3. Many other resorts have a station such as Zermatt (c8am to 9pm with a couple of changes).

Austria

Skiers have the option of overnight or daytime services:
1. Overnight Ski Special (Fridays December to March)
Eurostar to Brussels then the Bergland Express. From St Pancras at 4pm Friday via Brussels Midi. Leaves Brussels around 10.30pm. Arrives Wörgl c 10am, Innsbruck & Kitzbühel 10.30 and Zell am See 11.30.

2. Overnight via Munich
A 5pm Eurostar arrives in Munich around 9am (change at Paris) with connections to arrive Innsbruck at 11.30 and Kitzbühel at 12 noon.

3. Daytime
Austria have an extensive rail network running late into the night, so most resorts are possible with some changes. As an example for timing, leaving St Pancras c 8am to get the 11.30am from Paris to Munich (via Stutgard) arriving c5pm. Then the 7.30pm will arrive in Innsbruck c9.30pm and St Anton c11.30pm.
